Here you can register your interests to display and to enter any of the competitions you wish.<\/p>\n

Important things to note are:
\nThe Expo displays and competitions are open to anyone.<\/p>\n

Entries to the NZBA display and competitions are NOT eligible for the wider Expo display and competitions.<\/p>\n

For the Expo display and competitions:
\nAny tree submitted for the Expo display and competition must have been owned by the current owner for at least 2 years. This includes yamadori and collected trees.<\/p>\n

All successful entrants for the displays (trees, suiseki, ceramics, kusamono, accents) are responsible to set up their display between 0830hrs and 1600hrs on Friday 9 October 2026 and removed after 3pm on Sunday 11th October 2026.<\/span><\/p>\n

Trees for display<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Let us know how many trees or Shohin groups you would like to enter in a single- or multi-point display and what length of table you would ideally want for each tree or display. Send us a photo of each tree or Shohin display group and let us know the approximate size (height and width) of your trees or Shohin display<\/p>\n

There is no limit to the number of trees or Shohin groups you can enter for consideration. Shohin groups must have 3 or more trees.<\/p>\n

All entrants must supply their own stands and accents.<\/p>\n

Entering Suiseki for the Show<\/h3>\n

Let us know how many suiseki you would like to enter, their origin (NZ or overseas), their approximate size, and if you wish to display your stone in a formal two- or three-point display setting, what length of table you would ideally want for your display.<\/p>\n

There is no limit to the number of stones you can enter for consideration.<\/p>\n

All entrants must supply their own stands and accents if used. Stones must be mounted on a daiza or be placed in a suiban or doban.<\/p>\n

Entering Kusamono for the Show<\/h3>\n

Let us know how many kusamono you would like to enter, their approximate size, and if you wish to display your kusamono in a formal two- or multi-point display setting, what length of table you would ideally want for your display<\/p>\n

All entrants must supply their own stands and accents.<\/p>\n

Entering Accents for the Show<\/h3>\n

Let us know how if you would like to feature a display of accents (plants, okimono or a combination). Send us a photo of the intended display.<\/p>\n

All entrants must supply their own stands and accents for the display.<\/p>\n

Closing date for entry is 1st of June[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Ceramics” tab_id=”1759027047894-09da674d-fd26″][vc_column_text css=””]Let us know if you would like to enter your treasured vintage, classic or contemporary bonsai ceramics of any origin for display. Send us a photo of each.<\/p>\n

‘Ceramics can either be displayed directly on the black table cloth, on a formal stand (as for bonsai – a jita, slab, mat or a stand), or on a suitably sized box draped in black cloth.<\/p>\n

All entrants must supply their own display stands, boxes and drapery.<\/p>\n

The NZ Bonsai Expo 2026 Potters’ Ceramics Competition<\/strong><\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

This competition, open to New Zealand residents, is divided in classes based on the size of the pots, how the pots are made, the form of the pots, the finished surface of the pots. All pots must be unplanted.<\/span><\/p>\n

All pots must be fired to stone ware temperature i.e. Cone 6 or above.<\/p>\n

The pots must be made by the person submitting the entry. Collaboration with another person who worked on aspects of design, construction and glazing is permitted.<\/p>\n

More than one submission for consideration by the panel is permitted.<\/p>\n

The panel will consider the submissions to determine which entries will be staged and judged for the competition.<\/p>\n

Successful entrants will be responsible for getting their pots to the show and staging them as directed no later than 1600h on Friday 9 October 2026. While pots selected for the competition can<\/p>\n

be placed directly on the show bench, we encourage the use of some form of stage be it mats or tables. These must be in proportion to the pot(s).<\/p>\n

Entries will be available for collection once the show closes on Sunday 11 October. No pots are to be removed before the show closes. The Wellington Bonsai Club will not be responsible for any damage or losses.<\/p>\n

Those intending to enter the competition will be required to submit an A4 sized page with up to 6 images as follows;<\/p>\n

  • Kusamono<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    Five companion plant pots<\/p>\n

    One separate image of the front of each the five pots (each a different shape with different finishes) along with a single image, looking down into the five pots. For clarity; each entry submitted for selection will be a single A4 page having a total of six images (2 across x 3 lines)<\/p>\n

      \n
    • Mame and Shohin<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      Three pots each of different shape and finish are required for each entry. Pots are to be no greater than 225mm in size.<\/p>\n

      • the diameter for round \/ circular pots;<\/li>\n

        • Pots greater than 225mm<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
          Where the 225mm figure is the\u00a0<\/span>minimum<\/b>\u00a0distance measured as:<\/div>\n

            \n
          • the diameter for round \/ circular pots;<\/li>\n
          • the longest width of an oval pot; or.<\/li>\n

            Pots may be; hand-made \u2013 free form; using another substrate to support the clay; thrown on a wheel; or, slip cast. Each of these methods will be subdivided as follows:<\/p>\n

            o Natural<\/p>\n

            Including the raw clay surface, slips, terra sigillata, oxide washes or wood ash (generated during a wood firing) are permitted.<\/p>\n

            o Glazed<\/p>\n

            One separate image of the front, back and sides looking down on the pot and of the bottom are required for consideration by the judges. For clarity; each entry submitted for selection will be a single A4 page having a total of six images (2 across x 3 lines) \u2013 two images of each pot.<\/p>\n

            A panel of judges with complimentary skills and knowledge and has been brought together to assess and judge these pots. The judges are:<\/p>\n

            Anneke Borren MNZM, FAFA<\/strong><\/p>\n

            Anneke was born in the Netherlands, immediately post WWII. She is Fellow of the Academy of Fine Arts who has been, and still is, actively working with clay for almost 70 years. Her work is held in collections in New Zealand and internationally.<\/p>\n

            James Carter<\/strong><\/p>\n

            An Australian by birth James migrated to New Zealand to establish his eponymous studio in Te Horo, Kapiti Coast. He has wide experience in working with glazes is wood, gas and electric kilns.<\/p>\n

            Brian Catley<\/strong><\/p>\n

            Brian, a collector of New Zealand ceramics, is passionate about all things Japanese. He has lived, thought and travelled extensively in Japan over the last fifteen years.<\/p>\n

            Dr Kumiko Jacolin<\/strong><\/p>\n

            Kumiko is a potter and language specialist. She was raised in an artistic family in Japan, including her grandfather\u2019s private bonsai collection in a traditional Japanese garden. Her doctoral research explored the integration of Japanese-style pottery into New Zealand\u2019s ceramic art.<\/p>\n

            Stock Trees<\/h3>\n

            The Wellington Bonsai Club invites offers of high-quality stock trees for Jonas to demonstrate and work his magic with. We are looking for:<\/p>\n

            1. Raw stock (nursery, field-grown or yamadori (collected)) to be taken on the first steps of the journey to becoming a bonsai.<\/p>\n

            2. Trees which have had their first styling, perhaps by a demonstrator in a previous convention or workshop, and are now ready for the second styling to become show worthy.<\/p>\n

            3. Well established and showable trees for refinement.<\/p>\n

             <\/p>\n

            The Club offers the following options:<\/p>\n

            1. You keep the tree after it is styled, paying the Club $400 for Jonas\u2019 work.<\/p>\n

            2. The Club auctions the tree after Jonas\u2019 work, splitting the proceeds 50\/50 with you.<\/p>\n

            3. You donate the tree to the Club and it is auctioned after Jonas\u2019 work, all proceeds going to support the costs of hosting the convention.<\/p>\n

            4. The Club buys the tree from you at an agreed price and it is auctioned after Jonas\u2019 work, all proceeds going to support the costs of hosting the convention.<\/p>\n

            Beside the usual display of fantastic bonsai from around the country, we are also showcasing the complementary arts of suiseki, kusamono, accent plants and the potter.<\/p>\n

            Register your interest to display here (whether you or your Club is a member of the NZ Bonsai Association or not).<\/p>\n

            Display spaces of up to 1.7m will be allocated to allow you to display your treasures to their best in a single or multipoint display.<\/p>\n

            We will also invite some Lower North Island Clubs or groups to set up a display.<\/p>\n
